O Romeo, Romeo! What’s in a name?

head with bubbles with equations around it

The term “guinea pig” originally was a name to describe an inexperienced midshipman sailing the seas.  A midshipman is a trainee on a ship who is still new at sea and learning the ropes. It wasn’t until the 20th Century that the term “guinea pig” was used as a word to describe a person or animal used as a subject in a scientific experiment. The term was first recorded in Henry Power’s book Experimental Philosophy in 1664.

A Link to the Spirits

In many South American cultures the guinea pig is thought to bring healing to those who are sick. Guinea pigs are also thought to appease the gods. They have been used in rituals to help people pass from one stage of life to the next as well as in a celebration of Patron Saints Day.

In the healing ritual a guinea pig is dressed with a ribbon and a piece of clothing from the ailing person. They are then taken up to a sacred place in the Andes called Quinchi Urco where guinea pigs roam wild. As the guinea is released it is said that he takes the sickness with him.

Skinny pigs most often have hair on their feet, legs and muzzles as well as wrinkles on their legs. They do require a blanket in their cage to regulate body temperature to make up for the absence of hair. Skinny pigs are commonly used in laboratories for dermatology research. They became more popular in the 1990’s in places like Scandinavia, Russia, the US, and Canada.
